39 killed, over 40 injured as Hirakhand Express derails

Upwards of 39 travelers lost their lives and more than 50 were harmed when the motor and nine mentors of the Hirakhand Express, headed for Bhubaneswar from Jagdalpur, crashed close to the Kuneru railroad station in Vizianagaram area late on Saturday night. The casualties included 15 ladies and a baby.

The Odisha government has reported an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh for the closest relative while Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu additionally declared ₹5 lakh ex-gratia for casualties from Andhra Pradesh. Thirty-one of the casualties are from Odisha, eight are from Andhra Pradesh.
